Dive Into Dutch

It’s a project for those interested in the Netherlands — its culture, history, and traditions. No matter how well you know this country, I hope you’ll find plenty of interesting and exciting information here.

This project evolved from my blog on Instagram, which was started at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. At that time, there was an acute lack of social connection and exchange of interesting information. Besides, it was impossible for me to go to the Netherlands: the borders were closed. So there was an urge to share everything I know and love about this country, spreading the word about this amazing place. Thus I decided to start a blog. Pretty soon, however, it became clear that a blog was not enough either, so I set out to record lectures that tell more about my favorite country. For the audio app MAPO.GUIDES, I recorded a historical audio tour about Nijmegen city. Why Nijmegen, can you ask? Because I really love history and Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands and its full of history.

Online-lectures

Lectures on the history and culture of the Netherlands are short 30-minute presentations with stories about various events in Dutch history, about the habits and traditions of the country.

It’s a proven fact that the average attention span of a person is 20-30 minutes, so my lectures last this long. For the experience to be the most gezellig, as the Dutch say, you can pour yourself a cup of tea or a glass of wine while watching a lecture. I invite you to immerse yourself in the wonderful world of this country and learn plenty of new exciting information about it. Let me assure you: half an hour will fly by. And if you wish so, you can always listen to a number of lectures, as they are usually integrated into a course.

Excursions

When we mention the Netherlands, the first cities that come to mind are Amsterdam, the capital; The Hague, the residence of the royal family and the headquarters of The International Court of Justice; and Rotterdam, the biggest port in Europe and the 4th biggest worldwide.

But I am inviting you to have a stroll with me around the oldest city of the Netherlands. It was founded in the I century A.D. and was the first to receive the status of a city — let’s have a walk in Nijmegen.

I’ll show you the most exciting and significant spots of the city and tell you its thrilling story.

Audio tour

It’s so nice to walk slowly through the streets of an unfamiliar, and sometimes familiar, city. And if at the same time you are listening an interesting story about the history of this city from a local guide in your headphones, then this is doubly pleasant and exciting! That’s why I’ve recorded for you an audio tour of the historical center of Nijmegen calls «Discovering Nijmegen», which you can listen to by downloading the audio application MAPO.GUIDES.

At your own rtythm, taking breaks for a cup of tea or a glass of wine, you can walk around the city and get a lot of interesting and useful information about its richest history. And all this for the price of a cup of coffee with a cake, agree just perfect?

About me

Hi! My name is Katja, and I’m half-Russian half-Dutch. Dutch not by origin, but deep in my soul. I was born in Moscow, but I’ve been living between the two countries for more than 30 years. The land of mills and tulips has become my second home.

Thanks to my Dutch-Russian family, I’ve gotten to know this small proud kingdom very well. I’ve explored its everyday life, mindset, culture, traditions, and history. From the very beginning, I have wanted to share my knowledge and love for this country.

I have a degree in Cultural Studies, and I love to engross myself in studying all kinds of sources about the past in order to trace the sequence of events, to pursue the truth of what took place and to draw certain conclusions about the reasons of these events. Therefore, the history and culture of the Netherlands in particular became the main topics for my personal project Dive Into Dutch.

Everything that you read in my blog, everything that I tell you in my online-lectures and excursions is the result of thorough research and selection of the most fascinating information from reliable sources. It is my firm rule not to use Wikipedia.

I speak three languages: Russian, English, and Dutch, which gives me an opportunity to use authentic materials.

I do hope that you will enjoy my blog, my lectures, and my excursions. I want to believe that you’ll fall in love with this tiny charming country the way I once did.
